    Chris Lin,

According to a recent report from IDC, from  2013 to 2020, the digital universe will grow by a factor of 10—from 4.4 zettabytes to an alarming 44 zettabytes –  that’s more bytes than liters of water in the ocean. Organizations today are not only relying on more data than ever before, but are also creating more of it. This is the result of digitalization, and it presents a challenge: how to manage, control, leverage, and influence data to work for you, not the other way around.

With the current exponential growth of data, the most pressing issues facing IT today are the lack of resources. To fight the torrent of data, organizations default to common solutions such as moving datato cloud, buying more flash storage, or investing in hyper-converged platforms. These solutions help, but they don’t solve the larger problem.

" To stay productive organizations need to evolve and ensure that IT information is available, visible, and recoverable in the most effective way"

To stay productive organizations need to evolve and ensure that IT information is available, visible, and recoverable in the most effective way. The reason this isn't working is because all data isn't

created equal. IDC suggests that only 5 percent of data is valuable. This leads to those responsible for data analysis spending their time prepping data instead of analysing it. By focusing on infrastructure, the real problem is left to get worse as blind spots are created with organizations managing, deleting, moving, storing, and recovering their information without clear visibility.

This calls for a re-evaluation of data in terms of usage, rather than importance or a belief of need. Looking at when the data is used will help define its ideal storage location. Once this is established, a decision can be made for itto be moved to an off-site storage, cloud server or destroyed. Such decisions are crucial and need to be fully considered when planning budgets as storage retrieval and expansion all cost money.

At Veritas, we believe that there are four key ways enterprises can manage their data better:

    • Backup and Recovery–Enterprise level heterogeneous backup and recovery suites can provide cross-platform backup functionality to a large variety of operating systems and enable companies to protect, locate, and recover more information in less time.
    • Business Continuity– Companies can defy disasters and outages with enterprise continuity solutions that work across applications, no matter what or where they’re running, even across hybrid clouds.
    • Storage Management–Companies should manage their storage environments regardless of hardware platform, hypervisor, or vendor. A good Software-Defined Storage solution can enable faster application deployment and the appropriate Quality of Service customized with the level of visibility required.
    • Information Governance–With clear visibility of who’s using their information, where they’re using it, and how, companies can ensure greater compliance, liability, and focus on the information that matters most.

Data should empower organizations and not drag them down. When organizations start putting information first, it doesn’t matter how drastically their business changes. Their information should always be visible, available and ready to deliver real insights and generate business outcomes when and where you need them most.
